Looop

Journaling made simple and safe

About Looop

Looop is a solution that enables a user to journal using voice memos.

Problem

As I reflected on the difficulty I faced in finding a journaling app that actually worked for me as I always struggled to put my thoughts on paper, I realised that there is a way to facilitate this search, not just for me, but for others as well; then I discovered a business opportunity that helped me design Looop.

The problem in question was:

How could I facilitate the search for journaling apps for the sake of those that struggle to put their thoughts & ideas down on paper?"

Hypothesis

"By creating an app where users are able to record their thoughts & ideas"

Competitor Research

To have a better idea of the elements that are missing from the market, I conducted this competitor research where I've analysed three main journalling apps and recorded the feedback from those that have previously used the app.

This allowed me to have a better understanding of what people are struggling with and what the current scenario of the market is. The apps I focused on were the Sound Off, Day One Journal & DailyBean.

The feedback I've gathered from the people that have used the apps above was:

Research

To find out if my hypothesis was correct I conducted a survey with 14 people where I asked questions that could help me understand if my hypotheses were correct and what users are thinking.

After the research I was able to validate my hypotheses and the insights from the survey are that:

  • 28.6% of the respondents don't know how to journal.
  • Many of them mentioned that they would like to have a place to rapidly access when thoughts and ideas occur.
  • The majority of respondents say they are open to trying journaling using voice memos.
  • A new problem raised during my research is: people are scared of not finding their entries again or easily.
  • Majority of respondents use notebooks to journal and a small percentage of them use journaling apps.
  • Many of them don't have the patience to write things down.

Memorable Quotes

  • "Would be nice [to have] something that I can access rapidly when occurring ideas or thoughts."
  • "Hearing a voice rather than reading might be more beneficial."
  • "I would love to learn how to journal, but I don't have much time or patience to just sit down and write down my thoughts and feelings as I am quite an anxious person."
  • "I already use voice memos a lot to keep track of my ideas and days so by journaling using voice memos I believe it would much easier."

User Flow

The next step was to create the user flow to understand how the solution would work and all the steps the user would need to take.

High Fidelity Wireframes

As part of my development I’ve created six wireframes of the main pages of the app. The next step would be to carry on developing the rest of the interfaces.

User Interfaces

The final design step was to create the user interfaces and here I have designed 11 pages including the home page, profile, notifications, settings, etc. To design my interfaces I have used Figma.

Prototype

To create my prototype I have also used Figma. Click the button below to access my prototype!

Retrospective

For this project I have conducted a complete UX/UI design project where I created the app Looop in response to the personal problem I came across. I would say what went well during this project was the research and design of the app, as it helped me develop my technical skills and communication. I really enjoyed conducting this project as it allowed me to further develop my skills when conducting a UX/UI project.

A few of the things I learned during this experience were how to conduct professional interviews, the importance of extensive research around audience, business, etc; and lastly the importance of creating a flowchart to better support your solution.

A few of the tools I have used during this project were primarily Figma, Google Forms, Adobe Creative Suite and Pinterest. The importance of using Figma to design my solutions is because I am very familiar with this tool and it would allow me to create my design easily. However, I also wish I had experimented with Adobe XD as well, since it's a toll I am not very familiar with. This is why, my goal for my next project is to challenge myself to explore using Adobe XD to develop my technical skills and step out of my comfort zone. I think that's also important as XD is an industry standard tool.
